OverviewBuilding a balsa wood model is a popular educational project and a way to learn about many
issues important to the design of real civil engineering projects. A balsa wood project
touches on principles of building and construction trades, engineering, physics and static
equilibrium. The competition will instill students the importance of engineering designs by
getting them to construct a simple balsa wood structure subjected to constraints which will
then be put through a loading test.
The objective of the competition is to design and construct a structure prototype of a water tower
(balsa wood tower) that can support its weight and withstand greatest amount of force before
falling. Water towers or elevated water tanks are liquid storage containers these tanks are
usually storing water for human consumption.
